Millions of dollars are being spent on media ads, and in Senate hearings, bombast abounds — all in response to the proposed nuclear treaty which has been in negotiations between five plus one (United States, Russia, China, Great Britain, France, Germany) and Iran since 2013. The treaty was agreed upon in July 2015, and is now being evaluated by the Senate.

In early responses, Sen. Ted Cruz has called Secretary of State John Kerry a Pilate (for washing his hands of responsibility for nuclear inspections in Iran, those inspections to be carried out by [Horrors!] the International Atomic Energy Agency). Outside the Senate, presidential candidate Mike Huckaby claimed that acceptance of this treaty would be comparable to the Nazis herding the Jews to their deaths in the gas chambers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel labeled the treaty a “monumental mistake.”

In an interview with Washington Spectator, Joseph Cirincione, president of Plowshares Fund, “a non-profit global security foundation dedicated to reducing nuclear stockpiles and stopping emerging nuclear powers,” made this comment: This agreement provides for “...the most intrusive inspection regime ever negotiated...” for such a treaty. He also asked those who claim that Iran is a major supporter of terrorism, “Why is Iran concurrently supporting the U.S. and other allies against ISIS?” In addition, as David Cortright in the April issue of Sojourners notes: “Washington and Tehran agree on the need to end the war in Syria and counter the threat from ISIS — Groups like ISIS thrive on war — Peacebuilding strategies offer the greatest promise for effectively countering ISIS.” And, to conclude, I contend that as a self-proclaimed Christian country, we should overcome our fears and put our faith in the Prince of Peace, not weapons.
