Valuing All Families

I APPRECIATED Julie Polter's editorial, "Who Speaks for Family Values?" (June 1993).

I'm a single mom dedicated to providing a healthy and happy home for my daughter. I used to listen to James Dobson's "Focus on the Family" radio program in hopes of hearing helpful advice; instead, his programs made me doubt my qualifications as a mother and as a Christian. According to Dobson, the family I have -- since it isn't patriarchal -- isn't traditional, and God smiles only on traditional families.

I don't listen to "Focus on the Family" anymore. Maybe someday I'll find a radio program that discusses the issues of all families, and not just one type.
