U.N. Calls for Decade of Peace and Nonviolence

The United Nations General Assembly voted in November to proclaim the first decade of the 21st century "The Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World (2001-2010)." The appeal came to the United Nations signed by 23 Nobel Peace Laureates, including Nelson Mandela, the late Mother Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and the Dalai Lama. In their letter, they urged the United Nations "to make the children of the world aware of the real, practical meaning and benefits of nonviolence in their daily lives."
